Bamboo-Maple-BiLam Doublewave Bow. This was actually my first bow building project. Turned out beautifully, I think. Sad to say it suffered a crack after about 20 shots that rendered it unusable. Still pretty though
Specs for those of you interested in archery: back bamboo, belly maple, grip black walnut, overlays horn length o.a.: 56,5" length (stringed): 53,5" bowstring: 12 string dacron flemish spliced ~25#@25"
this look very cool! nice craftmanship. how heavy is it? I once made a bow with laminated bamboo(no glue), its wrapped with rattan and that added quite some weight.
It looks great, I can't believe it cracked. The design looks solid, and the material you used is very good. For my own learning purposes, do you happen to know why it cracked or can you tell me where? Also, did you make the Flemish-style string or purchase it somewhere?
Sure! I uploaded a picture of the crack. The crack is just above the shelf, on the picture you can see the tip of the horn plate there. It goes irregularly through the walnut and the bamboo layer.
I do not exactly know why that happened, but I have some theories: It could just have been a weak spot in one of the wooden layers (bamboo isn't really wood, but...). While wood is an absolutely great material, my favorite to work with actually, it is naturally grown and therefore there's always a possibility of some irregularities. It's also very possible that the design itself, allthough very pretty, has some flaws. As mentioned, this was my first bow, so I had not that much of an idea what I was doing... and still haven't. Probably the bamboo layer is too wide in proportion to the other components and just 'crushed' them...
As to the string, yes, I spliced it myself following this instructions (which are in german...). It's not that hard, far cheaper than buying a complete string and you can match your string better to a probably rather unusual bow length or other special requirements...
So if you're building a bow yourself, the best of luck to you, don't get frustrated if something doesn't work at the first try, and show your results on dA!
Thank you! And yeah, well, I guess that's what you get for starting off with such an ambitious design as an absolute rookie :-D Had a lot of fun building it though, and learned a lot!
